Presentation Description

The Three R's of Building Community: Relevance, Relationships, and Results

Topic area: Community building

Type: Keynote or workshop

Researchers have found that crime and delinquency declines in neighborhoods where there was a high degree of "collective efficacy" -- where neighbors share values, work together on projects, personally know the young people in the neighborhood and are actively involved in their lives.

In this session, participants will explore the 3R's of Community Building:

Relevance - how service providers and 'recipients' can feel a sense of purpose and connection to a common vision; how to create roles through which they can contribute, be recognized and feel as if they are stakeholders in their community

Relationships - how to involve youth and adults, forge partnerships and conduct programs in ways that build individual and collective capacity for taking effective action, and sustain that involvement over the long term

Results - how to build community support for your program by documenting what's different as a result of your work, and conducting an effective public relations campaign
