Engaging Students in School Safety: Designing a Safe School Ambassadors Program

Topic area: Bullying and Violence Prevention

Type: Workshop

School safety is everybody's business and students have a critical role to play. Every school needs a school safety plan that includes an organized team of students who are committed to and trained in observation, communication, negotiation and referral skills. Students who notice potential "hot spots", intervene as needed and make referrals where necessary. They are partners in prevention with school staff and community leaders.

This workshop will introduce the key components of a Safe School Ambassadors Program and the steps required to set one up. It will address how this effective violence prevention strategy can complement and/or strengthen existing conflict resolution and other youth involvement prevention efforts.
