Breaking the Code of Silence

FACT: We cannot "profile" the next shooter. It could be anyone on campus.

FACT: Students see and know things adults don't.

FACT: No one loves a snitch.

As incidents of school violence come closer to home, fear and self interest will motivate some students to take the risk of coming forward with information about potential acts of violence. But by themselves those motivators are not enough to keep our schools safe. Unless we do something different, too many more people will get hurt or killed. Anxiety and fear will pervade too many campuses, and impede the learning that is supposed to happen there.

Get all the youth and adults on your campus working together to keep it safe. Start a dialogue today.

Community Matters presents Breaking the Code of Silence, a one-day training that equips school leaders to enlist students as allies in school safety. We draw upon the latest research and the core principles of youth development to help participants understand the roots of the "code of silence"... and how to break it. Participants will explore proven strategies for shifting student attitudes and behaviors, and identify practical next steps to take on their campuses

This training is customized to meet the individual needs of each school community.
